Let content determine the breakpoints
Resize layouts until the relationship between elements begins to fail: a heading wraps awkwardly, navigation crowds, a card becomes too narrow or a comparison loses meaning. That is where the design needs to change.
Use flexible measures and natural wrapping before adding many breakpoints. Fluid type, sensible maximum widths and grid layouts can handle a wide range without device-specific instructions.
Prioritise rather than merely stack
Mobile layouts reveal what is truly important. Reorder content by decision value, keep primary actions nearby and reduce repetition. Do not hide essential information just because the original desktop sidebar no longer fits.
Some content needs a different representation, not a smaller one. A wide comparison table may become grouped records; dense filters may open in a focused panel; supporting media may move after the explanation.
- Message before decoration
- Touch-friendly actions
- Readable line lengths
- Content order that still makes sense
- Alternatives for wide data
Account for more than width
People use touch, mouse, keyboard, screen readers and voice. Avoid hover-only information and make focus states clear. Consider reduced-motion preferences, high zoom, landscape orientation and text that becomes longer after editing or translation.
Test slow connections and modest devices. Large video backgrounds and heavy animation can turn a visually responsive page into a practically unusable one.
Test real journeys on real devices
Check navigation, forms, errors, consent controls and key calls to action at several sizes. Rotate devices, increase text size, open the on-screen keyboard and confirm that important controls remain reachable.
Screenshots reveal layout; tasks reveal usability. Ask a tester to find a service, compare an option and make contact. A responsive site succeeds when the whole journey adapts, not just the columns.
